Eagle
Day!
This
past weekend we took a day trip to Cayuga, County Indiana
to the Duke Energy Plant for their annual Eagle Viewing Day!
It
was awesome. They put on an awesome
event for families. We even toured
the Energy Plant and learned about how power is made with coal. (all free) It was unbelievably clean there! Who would have connected a huge eagle habitat
and a power plant…
(THANK
YOU DUKE ENERGY for all you do,
we like electricity and we like eagles too!)

We
learned a lot about eagles and other birds of prey, we met Lincoln and some of
the other birds from Dollywood in Tennessee including a crow that took
donations and stuck them in a little money box!
I love this video...
The
week before our
trip, we completed
an Eagle Unit. We made Eagle Lapbooks, which
were totally fun! (our first time) Lapbooks are great for all ages… If you have
not tried lapbooks yet, you just need to.
I
found all the printouts for the eagle lapbooks at http://www.homeschoolshare.com/eagles.php
Thank you http://www.homeschoolshare.com/!!!!
If you are thinking of an Eagle unit... start there... there are fables and bible verses, links, everything you need... you won't have to do much other research. Trust me.... awesome link!
We
also made these cute Eagles out of toilet paper rolls, tissue, and construction
paper.
This
kids loved this game I made up…
We call
it MAMA EAGLE…
You
will need:
1.
a
tall stool or chair (for the eagle perch)
2.
a
place to build a nest for the babies (we used the couch and lots of blankets)
3.
Something
for the eagle to grab with its talons (toes) – we used individually wrapped
mini candies (since they pick it up with their feet)
4.
bare
feet
Object: One
child is the Mama or Papa Eagle. The
rest are the babies (there are usually only 2-3 in a nest, but our eagles “adopted”
extra) – you could have two separate nests and two separate parents if you have
more kids.
Rules:
Babies must stay in nest. Only “Eagle
talk” squawking, etc. (find and play eagle noises online for kids to imitate). The adult throws a few pieces of candy or toy
fish into the river (on the floor) and the mama eagle jumps down squawking
loudly and tries to grab the “fish” with her toes and jump up to the couch and
feed the babies. (you won’t have to tell them to do this…. It gets CRAZY loud….especially
the babies in the nest… who will soon remind you of nature and survival of the
fittest!)
After each baby has had one bite it is time to
switch mamas and start again. YOUR KIDS
WILL LOVE THIS GAME…. It gets loud and crazy!!!!
What Eagle trip or Unit would be complete without
an
Eagle Snack…. Did I mention that I
love themes!!!
Check out my Eagle Donut Cookie Snacks:
Ed Dibble…….get it?
Oh Common!
My kids thought that was hysterical!
Here is what you need:
1. donut holes or cake pops
2. Whole Cashews
3. Shredded Coconut
5. Chocolate Chips
6. Black and white sandwich cookies
7. Melted white chocolate... could use white chips or almond bark (found at Wal-mart)
Stick donut hole with toothpick and dip in white chocolate to coat, then roll in coconut. Spoon a glob of white chocolate on top of white side of sandwich cookie. Stick flattest side donut to cookie in warm chocolate. Hold toothpick while you put in eyes and nose. Add more coconut if you smudge a spot while putting on eyes.
(this is the only time you can legally eat an eagle!)
Deuteronomy 32:11 the Lord is
compared to a mother eagle protecting her young. “As an eagle stirreth up
her nest, fluttereth over her young, spreadeth abroad her wings, taketh them,
beareth them on her wings;"
Now I can say............The Eagle Has Landed!
.... P.S. Thank you Aunt T. for finding and researching the Eagle Trip!
